Childish Gambino - Sunrise
I’ve been listening to Camp a lot recently. This isn’t my favorite song on the album*, but it does have a line that I love but am conflicted about:
“Terry Gross on the mic. I’m the talk of the nation.”
I love that because it’s funny and only Childish Gambino/Donald Glover could get away with name checking NPR personalities in a rap. It bugs me though because Terry Gross is on Fresh Air, not Talk of the Nation. What’s wrong with using Neal Conan?
Seriously, this album is good, but the styles and subjects of the songs on it are so varied. There are songs like this one where it’s all about proving to everyone that he’s a great rapper, and songs about girls he wants to have sex with or how he doesn’t trust any women, and they are good and clever and enjoyable, but then there are brilliant songs like Outside and Hold You Down which talk about race and his experiences growing up.
*For the record, that’s probably Fire Fly.
